How to Use AI Document Cleaner V3: A Complete Beginner's Walkthrough
I remember the first time I opened AI Document Cleaner. I stared at the screen for 30 seconds wondering: "Which button do I press first?" There were three modes, a shadow toggle, a warp option, and two download buttons. I clicked randomly, downloaded something, and the output looked worse than the original. I almost gave up.
That was two years ago. Since then, I have processed over 600 documents and taught the tool to a dozen colleagues. This guide is what I wish existed on day one: a click-by-click walkthrough with zero assumptions. If you have never used AI Document Cleaner before, you will go from confused to confident in the next 10 minutes.

Before You Start: What You Need
Do not skip this. I have seen people waste 20 minutes because they missed one prerequisite:
- A modern web browser. Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. The tool runs in your browser, so no installation needed. Internet Explorer is not supported.
- Your document as an image file. JPG or PNG format. PDFs need to be converted to images first (one image per page). Most phones save photos as JPG by default.
- File size under 50 MB per image. If your photo is larger, compress it first. Phone cameras often produce 5-10 MB files, which is fine.
- A stable internet connection for the first load. The AI model downloads to your browser on the first visit (about 15-20 MB). After that, you can work offline.
Step 1 Open the Tool and Upload Your Files
Navigate to the AI Document Cleaner tool. You will see this interface:
or drag and drop files here
Supported: JPG, PNG | Max: 50 MB per file | Max: 50 files per batch
Method 1: Click "Choose Files"
- Click the blue "Choose Files" button
- Your operating system's file picker opens
- Select one or more JPG/PNG files
- Click "Open" (Windows) or "Choose" (Mac)
Method 2: Drag and Drop
- Open your file explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac)
- Select the files you want to process
- Drag them directly onto the upload area in your browser
- Release when the area highlights in blue
What happens next: Thumbnails of your uploaded files appear in a horizontal row below the upload area. Each thumbnail shows the filename and file size. A small "X" in the corner lets you remove individual files if you uploaded the wrong one.
contract_01.jpg
2.4 MB
contract_02.jpg
1.8 MB
Pro tip: Upload order matters for PDF consolidation. The tool processes files in the order you upload them. If you want page 1 first in your PDF, upload it first. You can re-order by removing and re-uploading, but it is easier to select files in the right order from the start.
Step 2 Choose Your Cleaning Mode
Below the upload area, you will see three mode buttons. This is where most beginners get confused. Here is exactly what each one does:
| Mode | What It Does | When to Use It | When NOT to Use It |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Basic cleanup: removes noise, normalizes contrast, sharpens text | Clean scans, well-lit photos, screenshots | Phone photos with shadows, documents with signatures |
| Shadow Removal | Everything in Standard PLUS lighting estimation and shadow flattening | Phone photos, uneven lighting, visible shadows on page | Already clean scans (creates unnecessary processing) |
| Signature Mode | Preserves ink transparency, removes background completely, exports PNG | Contracts, checks, legal forms, anything with signatures or stamps | General text documents where background does not matter |
How to choose: Look at your uploaded image. Do you see shadows? Use Shadow Removal. Do you see signatures or stamps? Use Signature Mode. Is it a clean scan with none of the above? Use Standard.
Click the mode button once. It turns blue (active). You can switch modes before processing, but not after. If you pick the wrong mode, you will need to re-upload and start over.
✓ Shadow Removal selected. Processing will include lighting normalization.
Step 3 Enable Shadow Removal (or Not)
Wait—did we not just pick a mode in Step 2? Yes, but this is a separate toggle that works alongside your mode. Here is the difference:
- Mode (Step 2) = the overall processing algorithm
- Shadow Removal toggle = an additional lighting correction layer
Recommended for phone photos and uneven lighting
When to enable it:
- You took the photo with your phone
- You see visible shadows on the document
- The lighting looks uneven (one side brighter than the other)
- You are unsure—enabling it when not needed does not hurt
When to disable it:
- The document is a flatbed scan (already even lighting)
- You are using Signature Mode (shadow removal can interfere with ink detection)
- You want the fastest processing time
My rule: If I am processing phone photos, I always enable Shadow Removal. If I am processing scans, I leave it off. The extra 1-2 seconds of processing time is worth the insurance.
Step 4 Click Process and Wait
Once your files are uploaded and your mode is selected, click the big blue "Process" button. Here is what happens:
Processing file 3 of 12... ▓▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░ 70%
Estimated time remaining: 4 seconds
Processing times (approximate):
- 1 file: 2-4 seconds
- 5 files: 8-12 seconds
- 20 files: 30-45 seconds
- 50 files (max): 90-120 seconds
What the AI is doing during this time:
- Loading the neural network model into your browser's memory (first time only)
- Analyzing each image for page edges, text regions, and lighting patterns
- Applying the selected mode's algorithm (Standard, Shadow Removal, or Signature)
- Reconstructing the clean version pixel by pixel
- Generating preview thumbnails for your review
Do not close the tab. Processing happens entirely in your browser, but closing the tab cancels the job. If you accidentally close it, re-open the tool and start over. Your original files are safe on your computer.
Step 5 Preview and Compare
After processing completes, the screen changes to show your results. This is the most important step—do not skip it.
BEFORE
AFTER
How to use the preview:
- Before/After slider: Drag the slider left and right to see the original and cleaned version side-by-side
- Zoom: Click the magnifying glass icon to zoom in to 200%. Check small text and signatures
- Navigate: Use the arrow buttons or thumbnail row below to switch between files in your batch
- Re-process: If a file looks wrong, click the circular arrow icon to re-process just that file
What to check in the preview:
- Text readability: Can you read the smallest font on the page?
- Signatures: Are they preserved or washed out?
- Page edges: Is any text cut off at the margins?
- Halos: Do you see white glows around text characters?
- Shadows: Are they gone or still visible?
If something looks wrong: Note which file has the issue. You have two options:
- Re-process: Click the re-process icon and try a different mode
- Remove: Click the X to remove that file from the batch and download the rest
Step 6 Download Your Cleaned Files
Happy with the preview? Time to download. You have three options:
Option 1: Download All (ZIP)
- Downloads all cleaned files as a single ZIP archive
- Files are named:
originalname_CLEANED.jpg - Best for: batch processing where you want individual files
- Format: JPG (compressed, smaller file size)
Option 2: Download PDF
- Combines all cleaned images into a single multi-page PDF
- Pages are in the order you uploaded them
- Best for: contracts, reports, anything you will email or print
- Each page is sized to standard A4 dimensions
Option 3: Download PNGs
- Downloads individual PNG files (lossless quality)
- Preserves transparency if using Signature Mode
- Best for: signatures, stamps, graphic design work
- File sizes are larger than JPG
Individual file downloads: Below the main download buttons, each file has its own small download icon. Use this if you only need one file from a batch, or if you want different formats for different files (e.g., PDF for the contract, PNG for the signature page).
Where files go: Downloads go to your browser's default download folder (usually Downloads/ on your computer). The tool does not store files on any server—everything stays on your device.
Batch Mode: Processing Multiple Files at Once
Batch mode works exactly like single-file mode, with a few extra considerations:
| Aspect | Single File | Batch (Up to 50) |
|---|---|---|
| Upload method | Click "Choose Files" and select 1 | Click "Choose Files" and select multiple, or drag a folder |
| Mode selection | One mode for one file | One mode for ALL files (cannot mix) |
| Processing time | 2-4 seconds | 30-120 seconds depending on count |
| Preview | One before/after slider | Thumbnail row + individual sliders |
| Download | Single file | ZIP, PDF, or individual files |
Batch best practices:
- Group by lighting condition. Do not mix phone photos (need Shadow Removal) with clean scans (Standard) in one batch. The mode applies to everything.
- Watch the total file size. 50 files × 10 MB each = 500 MB. Your browser may struggle. Keep combined size under 100 MB for smooth processing.
- Name files in order. If creating a PDF, the tool uses alphabetical order by default. Name files
01_contract.jpg, 02_contract.jpgetc. to control page order.
Troubleshooting: When Things Go Wrong
❌ "File too large" error
Cause: Your image exceeds 50 MB. Phone cameras in "ProRAW" or high-resolution modes can produce 25-50 MB files.
Fix: Open the image in any photo viewer and export/save as a lower resolution. Or use an online image compressor. Aim for 2-5 MB per file.
❌ "Unsupported format" error
Cause: You uploaded a PDF, HEIC (iPhone), TIFF, or BMP file.
Fix: Convert to JPG or PNG first. On iPhone: Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible. On Mac: Open in Preview > Export > JPG. On Windows: Open in Paint > Save As > JPEG.
⚠️ Processed image looks worse than original
Cause: Wrong mode selected. Standard Mode on a shadow-heavy photo will not remove shadows. Shadow Removal on a clean scan may over-process.
Fix: Re-process with a different mode. Phone photos = Shadow Removal. Clean scans = Standard. Signatures = Signature Mode.
⚠️ Text is cut off at the edges
Cause: The AI misidentified the page boundaries. Common with white paper on white backgrounds or photos with cluttered edges.
Fix: Re-shoot the document on a dark, solid-colored surface. Ensure the entire page is visible in the frame with a small margin around all edges.
⚠️ Signatures look faded or gray
Cause: You used Standard or Shadow Removal mode instead of Signature Mode. These modes treat signatures as "noise" and normalize them.
Fix: Re-process in Signature Mode. The ink will be preserved with full transparency.
✅ Browser tab crashed during processing
Cause: Too many large files overwhelmed your browser's memory.
Fix: Split into smaller batches (10-15 files). Close other browser tabs to free up RAM. Use Chrome or Edge for best performance.
✅ Downloaded PDF pages are in wrong order
Cause: Files were processed in alphabetical order, not your intended order.
Fix: Rename files with numbered prefixes before uploading: 01_page.jpg, 02_page.jpg, 03_page.jpg. The tool sorts alphabetically.
